The problem

A monk sets out from the foot of a mountain at dawn, follows the one path to the summit, and arrives at dusk. He sleeps there.

At dawn the next day he sets out down the same path and reaches the foot at dusk. On either day he may walk fast or slow, stop, or turn back for a while. Nothing else is said about either journey.

What can be said about the two journeys?
