The Thinking Board

Terms of service

Short, because the board is small and its rules are few. Using the site means accepting them.

What this is

The Thinking Board is a forum for mathematical problems and the arguments that settle them. It is free, run by one person, and provided as it stands. It is not a journal and it is not peer review: a mark means readers found an argument convincing, not that anyone has checked it.

Your account

Posting needs an account, which you get by signing in with Google. One account per person. You are responsible for what is posted from it. Choose an alias that is not another person’s name and not an attempt to look like the board itself.

What you may post

Mathematics, and talk about mathematics. Specifically, do not post:

  • work that is not yours without saying whose it is — a proof from a book or a paper is welcome, attributed;
  • material you have no right to reproduce;
  • abuse, harassment, or anything aimed at a person rather than an argument;
  • advertising, spam, or links whose purpose is elsewhere;
  • anything unlawful where you are, or where the board is hosted.

Disagreeing sharply with a proof is the point of the site. Disagreeing with its author is not the same thing, and only the first is welcome.

What you write stays yours

You keep every right you have in what you post. By posting it here you give the board permission to store it, display it, and show fragments of it — in search results, on the board, in a link preview. That permission is not exclusive and you may publish your work anywhere else. It ends when the work is removed, except for copies already made by others or by search engines, which are beyond anyone’s reach.

Everything you post here is public from the moment it is posted. Nothing on this site is private.

Review, marks and recognition

Problems are read by an editor before they appear; proofs are not reviewed at all and go up immediately. Editors decide what belongs on the board and nothing else — they cannot edit your words or mark proofs on your behalf. Only you can edit what you wrote.

The brass rule follows the convincing marks and moves when they move. Nothing here is final, and no position on this board is owed to anyone.

Where the founding problems came from

The seven problems the board opened with are signed The Thinking Board and have not been refereed. This is set out on the About page, and it is the reason the board would rather be corrected than believed.

Removal and suspension

Content that breaks the rules above may be removed, and an account used to break them repeatedly may be closed. You can delete your own replies and messages whenever you like, and ask for your account and its contents to be removed by writing to dheerajr17@gmail.com.

What is not promised

The board is offered as it is, with no warranty of any kind. It may be unavailable, lose data, change, or stop. Proofs posted here may be wrong — including the ones carrying marks, and including the ones the board posted itself. Check anything you intend to rely on.

To the extent the law allows, the person running this site is not liable for any loss arising from your use of it. Nothing here limits rights that cannot be limited.

Changes, and the law that applies

These terms may change; the date at the top says when they last did. They are governed by the laws of India. If part of them proves unenforceable, the rest still stands.
